adopt A senior Pet month
Shelters and rescue groups across the country are making a difference for senior family pets by participating in Petfinder’s adopt A senior Pet month.
If your shelter is using adoption specials or events highlighting senior pets, let me know and I will add your events to this post.
Below are two examples of shelters that are boosting adoptions by using discounts on older animals.
San Diego Humane society – $25 adoptions for senior pets
San Diego Humane society and SPCA has an ongoing special for its senior pets!
All senior dogs and cats (ages 7 or above) are always available to approved adopters for just $25. What a terrific idea!
Not only that, but if you are a “senior” yourself (age 55 or older), you can take home a senior pet at no cost through the seniors for seniors Program! lots of shelters offer the “seniors for seniors” discount, and I hope the idea catches on at even a lot more shelters.

Nevada Humane society – complimentary adoptions on adult pets
Nevada Humane society has an adoption special on adult dogs and cats through Nov. 11. approved adopters can take home adult dogs and cats (ages 4 months and older) at no cost.
Nevada Humane society also has an ongoing discount on senior family pets (10 years and older). The cost to adopt these animals is always $25 unless you are a “senior” yourself (age 55 or older). in that case, adopting a senior pet is free.
Why pet dog adoption specials work
Offering lower adoption fees on senior animals is a terrific way to bring extra attention to these pets.
When shelters advertise adoption specials, people are a lot more likely to reach out and donate. They see the good work the shelter is doing, and they want to help. It’s also a way to attract new donors, volunteers and potential adopters.
I’m delighted some shelters are trying to find creative ways to get a lot more senior animals into homes. the public is always ready to step forward and help. It’s up to the shelter to supply them with ways to do so.
